About Mike
I sometimes feel as though I was born with a slip in my hand!
I started my passion for the business way back in 1987, as a fresh graduate in London, and that lead me on a career which has taken me to Singapore, Australia, and finally to Switzerland where I retired as Swiss Re’s Global head of Property and Specialty after 36 years.

Along the way, I have made a number of lifelong friends through the business and had the privilege of a rich, deep and broad experience in the business of risk, capital, and resilience.
I have had more than my fair share of ups and downs, living, leading, and learning through multiple cycles, from global to national, and market changing events such as Piper Alpha, Hurricane Andrew, 9/11, the HIH Liability crisis, Katrina, Christchurch EQ, Tianjin, Covid 19, the war in Ukraine and Ian – to name a few !
The litany of disasters seems endless, but each in its way was the source of precious learnings, and over time the cycle of event, response and recovery show clear patterns and precedents which have helped to anticipate and manage the next.
Having lived 2/3 of my life immersed in this business, finishing up with responsibility for a team of 500 underwriters and actuaries and a portfolio of $15bn in premium, I understand the pressures that underwriters, leaders and management teams find themselves in today.
Throughout, I have found that my joy in the job has come from helping people reach their potential in this business, and working on problem solving, in equal measure. I want to continue to pay this forward now I have decided to move on from executive life.
My aim is to work with great clients - using my skills and experience to help them reach their goals.

The Technical Mentor
This service is designed to support underwriters development as they face increasingly complex challenges on their journey towards portfolio management. A big part of my role as an underwriting leader has been helping underwriters along their technical journey by regular dialogue on the day to day problems they face, by providing practical advice in solving underwriting challenges, and developing portfolio strategies, or sometimes helping to develop a cohesive storyline to explain what’s already in place.
While no two underwriting challenges are the same, I often find that there are similarities across classes of business or markets – and can leverage those cases to help provide constructive proposals for the topic at hand.
The great feedback that I have received from many colleagues has inspired me to continue to play this role.
This works best as a regular 1-1 catch up, but can also be extended to small groups or even tailored sessions for team offsites.
The Sounding Board
As a senior executive, sometimes it helps to have unbiased and objective feedback or advice, or just a knowledgable partner to bounce ideas off.
The Sounding Board offers access to a sparring partner who can offer deep insights on underwriting and market topics by drawing on broad global experience gained through multiple market cycles.
I have been in your shoes, and understand some of the challenges and complexity of working as a decision maker and leader in this industry.
The Sounding Board provides collaborative support to help address challenges and build strategy. We can work together to ‘work it out’ from scratch, or review work and ideas that you have already developed to provide feedback and prepare for internal discussions and review processes.
Flexibility is key – we can work out an approach that works for you. A tried and tested approach is to set up a regular schedule of meetings, but also add in ad hoc touch points as business needs dictate.
